La Información es poder. Pero como todo poder, hay quienes lo quieren para ellos mismos. Toda la herencia cultural y el conocimiento científico, publicado a través los tiempos en libros y publicaciones científicas, está siendo digitalizado y encerrado (cada vez más) por unas pocas corporaciones privadas. ¿Quieres leer los artículos de los más famosos resultados científicos? Necesitarás enviar enormes cantidades de dinero a editoriales como Reed Elsevier.

Hay quienes pelean para cambiar esto. El Open Access Movement ha peleado valientemente para asegurar que los científicos no firman sus derechos de autoría, si no que se aseguran que su trabajo sea publicado en Internet, bajo fórmulas que garanticen a cualquiera su acceso. Pero incluso en ésos escenarios, su trabajo se aplicará en cosas publicadas en el futuro. Por tanto, todo lo anterior hasta ahora se ha perdido.L’informació és poder. Hi ha qui lluiten per cambiar això. El Open Access Movement ha lluitat valentment per assegurar que els científics no signen els seus drets d’autoria, si no que s’asseguren que el seu treball sigui public a Internet, sota fòrmules que garanteixen a qualsevol el seu accès. Però inclús en aquests escenaris, el seu treball s’aplicarà a coses publicades en el futur. Per  tant, tot l’anterior fins ara s’ha perdut.

Això és un alt preu a pagar. ¿Obliga als acadèmics pagar diners per a llegir el treball dels seus colegues? ¿Escanejar llibreries senceres però sols permetre als teus companys de Google llegir-los? ¿Proveir articles científics a aquells de les elits universitaries del Primer Món, però no als nens del Sud Global? És abusiu e inacceptable.

“Estic d’acord”, diràn molts, “però, ¿què puc fer? Les companyies que conserven els drets d’autor, que fan enormes quantitats de diners posant preu a l’accès, i els seus perfectament legals – no hi ha res que poguem fer per a parar-los” Però hi ha alguna cosa que sí que podem fer, algo que s’està fent ja: podem contraatacar.

Aquells amb accès a aquests recursos -estudiants, bibliotecaris, científics- teniu un privilegi. Podeu alimentar-vos de tota aquesta font de coneixement mentre que la resta del món està bloquejat. Però no és necessari -moralment- que manteniu aquest privilegi per a vosaltres mateixos. Teniu el deure de compartir aquest coneixement amb la resta del món. Heu de fer-ho: compartir contrasenyes amb els teus colegues, complimentar formularis de descàrrega per als teus amics.

Mentres, aquells que han estat bloquejats no s’han estat quiets. Heu estat fisgonejant a travès de forats i salvant obstacles, lliurant informació bloquejada pels editors i compartint-la amb els vostres amics.

Però tota aquesta acció es produeix a la foscor, oculta sota terra. Ho denominen robar o piratería, com si compartir la riquesa del coneixement fos equivalent moral a bombardejar un vaixell i assassinar a la seva tripulació. Però compartir no és inmoral, és un imperatiu moral. Sòls aquells cegats per l’avarícia impedirien a un amic fer una còpia.

Grans corporacions, és clar, estan cegades per l’avaricía. Les lleis sota les quals operen ho requereixen, els seus accionistes es rebel·larien amb menys. I els polítics que les han permès, aproven lleis donant-lis el poder exclusiu per a decidir qui pot fer còpies.

No hi ha justícia si hi ha lleis injustes. És el moment d’apropar-se a la llum i, a la gran tradició de la desobediència civil, declarar la nostra oposició a n’aquest robatori privat de la cultura pública.

Necessitem obtenir aquesta informació, en qualsevol lloc en el que estigui enmagatzemada, elaborar les nostres còpies i compartirles amb la resta del món. Necessitem agafar allò que estigui fora del copyright i afegir-ho a l’arxiu. Necessitem comprar bases de dades secretes i volcar-les a la xarxa. Necessitem descarregar les publicacions científiques i pujar-les a les xarxes d’intercambi d’arxius. Necessitem lluitar per la Guerrilla del Open Access.

Alguns de nosaltes, a tot el món, no sols anem a enviar un fort missatge d’oposició a la privatització del coneixement, anem a fer que sigui una cosa del passat. ¿T’uniràs a nosaltres?

The world’s entire scientific and cultural heritage, published over centuries in books and journals, is increasingly being digitized and locked up by a handful of private corporations. Want to read the papers featuring the most famous results of the sciences? You’ll need to send enormous amounts to publishers like Reed Elsevier.

There are those struggling to change this. The Open Access Movement has fought valiantly to ensure that scientists do not sign their copyrights away but instead ensure their work is published on the Internet, under terms that allow anyone to access it. But even under the best scenarios, their work will only apply to things published in the future. Everything up until now will have been lost.

That is too high a price to pay. Forcing academics to pay money to read the work of their colleagues? Scanning entire libraries but only allowing the folks at Google to read them? Providing scientific articles to those at elite universities in the First World, but not to children in the Global South? It’s outrageous and unacceptable.

“I agree,” many say, “but what can we do? The companies hold the copyrights, they make enormous amounts of money by charging for access, and it’s perfectly legal — there’s nothing we can do to stop them.” But there is something we can, something that’s already being done: we can fight back.

Those with access to these resources — students, librarians, scientists — you have been given a privilege. You get to feed at this banquet of knowledge while the rest of the world is locked out. But you need not — indeed, morally, you cannot — keep this privilege for yourselves. You have a duty to share it with the world. And you have: trading passwords with colleagues, filling download requests for friends.

Meanwhile, those who have been locked out are not standing idly by. You have been sneaking through holes and climbing over fences, liberating the information locked up by the publishers and sharing them with your friends.

But all of this action goes on in the dark, hidden underground. It’s called stealing or piracy, as if sharing a wealth of knowledge were the moral equivalent of plundering a ship and murdering its crew. But sharing isn’t immoral — it’s a moral imperative. Only those blinded by greed would refuse to let a friend make a copy.

Large corporations, of course, are blinded by greed. The laws under which they operate require it — their shareholders would revolt at anything less. And the politicians they have bought off back them, passing laws giving them the exclusive power to decide who can make copies.

There is no justice in following unjust laws. It’s time to come into the light and, in the grand tradition of civil disobedience, declare our opposition to this private theft of public culture.

We need to take information, wherever it is stored, make our copies and share them with the world. We need to take stuff that’s out of copyright and add it to the archive. We need to buy secret databases and put them on the Web. We need to download scientific journals and upload them to file sharing networks. We need to fight for Guerilla Open Access.

With enough of us, around the world, we’ll not just send a strong message opposing the privatization of knowledge — we’ll make it a thing of the past. Will you join us?
